HSE's Faculty of Computer Science and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology have held the Mathematics of Machine Learning Olympiad for the fifth time. The participants competed for prizes and the opportunity to matriculate at two universities without exams by enrolling in the HSE and Skoltech joint master's programme in Math of Machine Learning.

In 2022, a record number of students applied to take part in the Olympiad; 67 students competed in solving complex mathematical problems of machine learning. Students from HSE University, Moscow State University (MSU), the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), Moscow Polytechnic University, Financial University, St. Petersburg State University, the National University of Science and Technology MISiS, ITMO University, Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management and others took part in the selection. The Olympiad was held in two rounds: distant selection of portfolios and on-site testing. This year, finalists competed offline at the Skoltech campus.

Following the first round, 28 participants reached the final where they took part in interviews and exams in mathematics and English. The committee included representatives of HSE University and Skoltech: Alexey Naumov, Quentin Paris, Vladimir Ulyanov, Maxim Rakhuba, Sergey Samsonov, Nikita Puchkin, Maxim Panov, Alexey Zaitsev, Dmitry Yarotsky, and Richik Sengupta.

The committee determined ten Olympiad winners, including three winners of 1st class certificates who are eligible for admission to the joint HSE and Skoltech programme without entrance tests, and seven winners of 2nd class certificates who will receive benefits upon admission — the maximum score for the interview.

The HSE University admission campaign starts on June 20 and will run through July 26. The last wave at Skoltech is also accepting applications until July 10.

Alexey Naumov, Academic Supervisor of ‘Math of Machine Learning’ Master’s Programme

Every year the Mathematics of Machine Learning Olympiad attracts the strongest graduates of Russian universities. Many winners of the Olympiad choose academic careers, publish high-level research results and participate in A-level conferences. I hope that this year’s winners will continue this wonderful tradition! I wish them success!

HSE Scientists Optimise Training of Generative Flow Networks

Researchers at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have optimised the training method for generative flow neural networks to handle unstructured tasks, which could make the search for new drugs more efficient. The results of their work were presented at ICLR 2025, one of the world’s leading conferences on machine learning. The paper is available at Arxiv.org.

HSE Students Show Outstanding Results at Prestigious CTF Competitions

In late October 2025, HSE University students achieved outstanding results in several Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions on information security. Five students joined the Moscow national team, which won the Russian Sports Programming Championship, while three other HSE teams became finalists and winners of the UralCUP CTF and the Kuban CTF tournaments. The CTF Academy, an initiative that brings together students and teachers, has served as a central hub for building HSE's CTF community.

Quantity over Quality: How Publication Activity Leads to Crisis

Participants of the 4th Fall into ML conference at HSE University held a discussion titled ‘Academia in Crisis: What Does the Future Hold?’ In particular, they examined why the number of scientific publications continues to grow, what the quality of these papers is, what expectations should be placed on researchers, and what role artificial intelligence plays in preparing academic articles.

Start of a Long Journey: Young HSE Scientists Contribute to Learning Theory at COLT 2025

Participation in high-level international events is crucial for the professional development of researchers starting their career in science. It provides an opportunity to exchange ideas, create promising teams, and make important connections. This summer, Denis Ryapolov and Askar Tsyganov, students of the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science programme and staff of the AI and Digital Sciences Institute at the Faculty of Computer Science of HSE University, attended the prestigious international Conference on Learning Theory, COLT 2025, which was held in Lyon, France. In an interview, they shared their experiences and impressions from the trip.

Indonesia Hosts HSE International Olympiad for First Time

HSE University and the Russian House in Indonesia have held the first offline INTO HSE olympiad in Jakarta. It is a new, free event in English for international school students.

Winners of Student Research Paper Competition 2024 Receive Awards

On February 10, the award ceremony for the winners and laureates of the 2024 Student Research Paper Competition took place at HSE University. Out of the 1,916 students to submit projectsto the competition, 320 participants became winners and laureates and were awarded in four categories: social sciences, economics and management sciences, exact sciences, humanities and creative industries.

Analysing Genetic Information Can Help Prevent Complications after Myocardial Infarction

Researchers at HSE University have developed a machine learning (ML) model capable of predicting the risk of complications—major adverse cardiac events—in patients following a myocardial infarction. For the first time, the model incorporates genetic data, enabling a more accurate assessment of the risk of long-term complications. The study has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

‘We Bring Together the Best Russian Scientists and AI Researchers at HSE University Site’

On October 25–26, 2024, HSE University’s AI and Digital Science Institute and the AI Research Centre hold the Fall into ML 2024 conference in Moscow. This year’s event will focus on the prospects in development of fundamental artificial intelligence, with SBER as its conference title partner.

Double Winner of the International Olympiad in Informatics Admitted to HSE Faculty of Computer Science

Ivan Piskarev, a member of the Russian national team who won gold at both 2023 and 2024 International Olympiads in Informatics (IOI), has enrolled in the bachelor's programme ‘Applied Mathematics and Information Science’ at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science. He first won the competition in September 2023 in Hungary, and then again in September 2024 in Egypt.

HSE Researchers Demonstrate Effectiveness of Machine Learning in Forecasting Inflation

Inflation is a key indicator of economic stability, and being able to accurately forecast its levels across regions is crucial for governments, businesses, and households. Tatiana Bukina and Dmitry Kashin at HSE Campus in Perm have found that machine learning techniques outperform traditional econometric models in long-term inflation forecasting. The results of the study focused on several regions in the Privolzhskiy Federal District have been published in HSE Economic Journal.
