UNIDO has published the Competitive Industrial Performance Report, presented at HSE
On September 18 at Higher School of Economics, UNIDO's Competitive Industrial Performance (CIP) Report 2012/2013: The Industrial Competitiveness of Nations: Looking Back, Forging Ahead was presented. The HSE Institute of Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge organised the event. The full text report is available on the UNIDO website.
Attended by numerous representatives of Russia's policymaking bodies and Moscow-based academic and business communities, the presentation received extensive coverage in the Russian media.
The Industrial Competitiveness of Nations: Looking Back, Forging Ahead describes the Competitive Industrial Performance Index, a tool that can be used to measure the competitiveness of nations. The index reflects a country's capacity to produce and export manufactured goods and the impact of its real sector on the global market. The authors of the report used the index to compile UNIDO's ranking on the competitiveness of industrial production.
Currently, despite lower industrial growth caused by the recent economic recession and a reduced share in world manufacturing output, countries with high per-capital income rank highest in UNIDO's CIP Index: Japan ranks first, Germany — second, and the United States — third. Russia, in 66th place a decade ago, has moved up to 36th position. Despite this dramatic rise, Russia lags significantly behind in the development of high tech industries.
