HSE Tops Ranking of Business Universities in Business Education
HSE University has taken the first place in the ranking of entrepreneurial universities and business schools by Expert Analysis Centre. The ranking’s evaluation criteria include startups that were launched by alumni of economics or business programmes.
In the overall ranking of entrepreneurial universities, HSE ranks in the top four, sharing 3rd and 4th places with Bauman Moscow State Technical University. In terms of the number of startups, HSE ranks 2nd with a total of 212 according to the list. And in terms of investments garnered by those startups, HSE ranks 6th.
‘Our most important task is to provide business support for research projects that are carried out within the university,’ says HSE University Vice President Igor Agamirzian. ‘Universities do not become great thanks to educational programmes. They become great thanks to two things: the quality and success of its graduates, and the appearance of promising technological developments that are ahead of the curve.’
In recent decades, an ecosystem of entrepreneurship has developed around technological developments, which has influenced the entire global technological landscape
According to Dmitrii Volkov, Deputy First Vice-Rector of HSE University, universities need to help students develop new skills, and in order to do this, universities need to change themselves. ‘We, for example, are now revising educational standards and introducing a block of cross-cutting competencies for all programmes,’ he says. ‘There is a substantial emphasis in our curriculum on digital skills.’
In total, the Expert ranking included 39 Russian universities. The ranking evaluated only universities that had produced at least 4 internationally recognized startups (which are included in the startup databases Crunchbase, AngelList, and Startup Ranking). The ranking evaluates universities according to seven indicators, which loosely fall into two categories: scale and success (65%) and demand (35%). The largest weight is assigned to the number of startups and the number of alumni who have founded startups, as well as the volume of investments received by the startups (each of which is weighted at 20% of the final score).
